Prince Philip, the husband of Queen Elizabeth II, has been hospitalized after feeling unwell for a short period of time, according to Buckingham Palace. At this time, Philip’s condition is unclear, though it doesn’t appear to be serious. The official line from the Palace is that the Prince’s admission to King Edward VII’s Hospital last night was purely a “precautionary measure.” According to a palace source, Philip’s malady is not COVID-related.

While Philip appears to be in relatively good health at 99 years of age, this is not his first hospital stay in recent years, as AP News notes. In 2011, after suffering chest pains, Philip was airlifted by helicopter to an infirmary, where he was treated for a blocked coronary artery. Then, in 2017, the year he retired from public duties, he was admitted to King Edward VII’s Hospital for an undisclosed ailment; and again in 2018, following a hip replacement; and once more in 2019, for planned treatment of a preexisting condition.

Philip has been staying at Windsor Castle with the queen through the pandemic. Last month, they both received their first doses of the COVID vaccine. It is unclear when they will be administered their second dose, though given the typical dosing timeline, it could be any day now.

According to the Palace, Philip is “expected to remain in hospital for a few days of observation and rest.” This post will be updated if additional information becomes available.
